Wales: Part 1

The first day of our weekend getaway to Wales started off a little rough... Mariel nearly missed the bus and there was rain in the forecast. However, as soon as we reached our first destination, all was good in the neighborhood and luckily the rain held off (for the entire weekend I might add!). Neither of us were really quite sure what to expect, but we wanted to visit our paternal homeland. Maybe we'd run into some long lost cousins?! While no such thing happened, we learned tons about this underrated principality of the United Kingdom. With a population of 3 million and a sheep population of 10 million, it was bound to be an interesting weekend!!!

Our first stop was the Roman Barracks and Ampitheatre in Carleon. Nestled in a tiny town and next to youth rugby fields, these Roman ruins had more than just history, they were also full of character.

Our second stop was the Caerphilly Castle. The castle is situated on an island and has breathtaking views of the Welsh countryside. It is one of the largest castles in Great Britain and was built in 1268-1271. It is astonishing that even the walls have lasted this long! Unfortunately, we were not able to tour the great hall because a wedding reception was occurring, but seeing the men in their kilts made up for the loss!

The wedding party bus, ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE.

I couldn't resist.

Our 3rd and final stop on Saturday was to St. Fagan's Museum of Welsh Life. It was an expansive outdoor and indoor museum full of Welsh history. We got to sample traditional Welsh toffee and apple cider. My favorite exhibitions were the simulated Welsh villages, dating back to the Iron Age, and the pastures full of British animals!

We were blessed with such a beautiful day!

Part 2 soon to come!

Time to Travel: # 1

This weekend I'm headed to Wales!
The Land of the Red Dragon - full of green hills, countryside and sheep.
While it isn't far from London, it sure will feel a world away from my current city life.
I'm hoping Wales' recent loss in the Rugby World Cup to Australia won't dampen the mood. I mean that quite literally, as Wales is the wettest European country.

Oh, and fingers crossed I'll see Wills and Kate!!!

Just Breathe

I'm feeling a little stressed. The "unknown" of this new place I call home
is giving me a bit of anxiety.

So what do I do in times like these?

Laugh a little.

And imagine I'm here:
with a few of my closest girlfriends, of course.

Every Day is a Blessing

I'm incredibly lucky to be in London where everyday is honestly amazing, and I feel as though the world is at my fingertips. Within a 15 minute walk from my flat, lies the Tate Modern, St. Paul's Cathedral, The Royal Courts of Justice, the Globe Theatre, the Borough Market, the Imperial War Museum, Blackfriars Bridge, Millenium Bridge, Temple Place, Victoria Gardens, ITV, The London Bridge, BBC, and soo much more... It really makes you appreciate your surroundings every single day.

The daily walk back from campus...extraordinary.

The good ol' cup of joe is a bit different this side of the pond.
How can this just not make you smile?

Elizabeth Taylor - A Life of Jewels

In celebration of the extraordinary life and legacy of Elizabeth Taylor, Christie's Auction House has had the honor of displaying The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor to give the public a rare glimpse into the private world of an icon. She was an extraordinary and passionate woman who had many husbands and philanthropic interests. She happily admitted to her love of jewelry, feeling herself the custodian of some fabulous pieces and even designing a line of fine jewelry sold through Christie's. She once said, "my mother says I didn't open my eyes for eight days after I was born, but when I did, the first thing I saw was an engagement ring. I was hooked."

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a 3-day preview of The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor at Christie's in London, where my sister is working towards her masters. The exhibition displayed her renowned jewels, expansive art collection, fabulous fashions, and other memorabilia before it will be auctioned off in December at Christie's New York.

Here are some of my favorites.
